Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only and is granted in recognition of a dentist’s “outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service, and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind.” Prior to being recognized as a Fellow of the ICD, the candidate's qualifications and achievements are evaluated by a series of credential committees in order to ensure that he or she is deserving of this high honor and adhere to the ICD motto, goals and objectives.

In 2012, Dr. Jackson was 1 of only 97 dentists worldwide to earn Mastership in The Academy of General Dentistry at the national meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the 60-year anniversary of the AGD in 2012, only 2,818 dentists had ever earned the title of Master. In 2012, Dr. Jackson was 1 of only 97 dentists worldwide to earn Mastership in The Academy of General Dentistry at the national meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the 60-year anniversary of the AGD in 2012, only 2,818 dentists had ever earned the title of Master. Another way to look at it is that this means that less than 1% of all dentists in modern dental history have achieved Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry.

To attain Mastership members must have been awarded Fellowship status in the Academy. They must then earn an additional 600 approved continuing education credit hours, meeting requirements across16 disciplines in dentistry, such as periodontics, orthodontics, endodontics, pediatrics, and dental implants. 400 of the required credit hours must be in participation courses, in which skills are learned through manipulation of dental materials. Thus, a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry must complete a total of 1,100 hours of continuing education to achieve this honor.

The Academy may bestow Fellowship on a person who has notably contributed to the advancement of the dental profession in one or more ways, such as: Clinical Practice; Research; Education; Public Service; Literature or Journalism; and Service to the Profession. The membership of the ADI includes many outstanding individuals in the dental profession who have a desire to give back a significant portion of what they have reaped. Upon approval, the Board of Regents awards the honor at a formal convocation ceremony at the Academy’s annual meeting.

In order to achieve achieve Fellowship, a dentist must:

1) provide a listing of 20 completed implant cases (both surgical & restorative), all of which must be at least 12 months old, for evaluation by the ICOI's Credentialing committee.

2) Provide documentation of completion of 75 hours or more of implant education in the preceding five years.

3) Provide a letter of recommendation from a current ICOI Fellow, IPS Master, ICOI Diplomate, or member of ICOI's Credentials Committee.

4) Submit a current Curriculum Vitae.

To maintain the Fellowship, a dentist must maintain their membership in good standing and must attend at least one ICOI/IPS sponsored or co-sponsored meeting every three years as well as accumulate 75 hours or more of implant education within five years after becoming an ICOI Fellow.

The Academy was founded in 1983 in San Antonio, Texas, as a forum for dentists, physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, dental technicians, and educators interested in exchanging ideas related to Sports Dentistry and the dental needs of athletes at risk to sports' injuries. The Academy's mandate is to welcome interested colleagues from all healthcare disciplines to promote the advancement of research/development and education in this field. Activities include the collection and dissemination of information on dental athletic injuries and the encouragement of research on the prevention of dental injuries to athletes.

In order to achieve Fellowship, a member dentist must complete 400 Continuing Education hours within a 10-year span in a variety of sports dentistry categories including:

Sports dentistry injury treatment
Sports dentistry injury prevention (including mouthguard fabrication)
Sports dentistry community activities
Spit tobacco and oral cancer issues
Sports training and eating disorders

The mission of the PFA is to recognize and develop outstanding leadership in our profession, internationally.  They accomplish this by consistently focusing on professionalism, integrity, and ethics worldwide, by their own conduct as worthy role models, by the advancement of dentistry to the highest level, by supporting and honoring colleagues for their distinguished work, research, contributions, and public service, and by providing excellence in programs, education, and leadership in oral health care.

Fellowship in the Academy is by nomination and is designed to honor past accomplishments in field of dentistry and encourage future productivity.  Professional leaders select fellows based on contributions to dental literature, service to the profession of dentistry, and service to the general community, thereby bringing credit to dentistry, are among the criteria sought in recruiting new members.
